CONSTRUCTION OF A DINING ROOM AND KITCHEN PROJECT

Location: Dessie, Wollo zone of the south, Amhara region, Ethiopia

Execution period: 2.010-2011

Status: construction finished 2011. Facility up and running.

Beneficiaries: 100 students / day

Description: Dessie, with a population of 181,658 inhabitants, is the capital of South Wollo zone (2,518,862 of inhabitants)

School Description: The Michael Negus school has 1240 enrolled  children. It is located in the poorest neighborhood in the city. 41% of the students are orphans of father or mother or both parents. Within this percentage, 18% are orphaned children, of whom half (around 9%) do not have a close family and was living alone on the streets or being exploited as domestic worker.

These situations and difficulties that these children are in their daily lives, causes in most cases early school abandonement, depriving them of a better future and directing them towards risky situations that compromise their personal and social development. Moreover, their daily struggle, their precarious survival is far from decent and acceptable from any context.

The Michael Negus school did not have room or kitchen. Most kids spend their days at school and their families do not have the means to provide them with a meal.

The center is concerned with the significant number of students with early abandonement, during 2007/2008 a total of 73 students (5.8% of the total) stopped going to school, many of them with a brilliant academic curriculum. There is also a significant absenteeism during the year, more than 5%.

The reasons for these withdrawals are so evident as regrettable. Mostly are students whose family circumstances needs them to provide for the family.

The director and staff of the Negus Michael school, analyzing the situation of these children considered that offering them a daily meal  would reduce the family burden and promote their attendance.

With these considerations and the request of the school IPI COOP decided to build a dining room, kitchen and warehouse (200 m2 total).

Parents and school staff have been involved as to achieve a greater commitment.

The working staff come from families of the community and they get a salary for their job.

Initially IPI COOP is responsible for the daily cost. The goal, however, is to optimize the use of the room for other activities open to the entire community so that the dinning room becames sustainable (music and theater workshops, screenings, lectures).

The school itself is considering other possibilities in order to assume the future running costs of the dining room.

Construction finished in 2011. Facility up and running.
IPI COOP provides food to 80 students daily
The running cost of the project is 1300 EUR/month
With only 5 EUR you can help feed a child during a whole week
